Our Purpose

The reason Elizabeth Presbyterian Church exists on this planet: Helping people meet and walk with Jesus. This is a paraphrase of the Great Commission from Matthew 28:19-20, "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Our purpose then is twofold – helping people to meet the Lord and receive his salvation, and then discipling them in their Christian walks, teaching them the ways of the Lord.

Notice that there are two participles in Jesus' Great Commission. Participles are helping verbs that further clarify a central verb. The two participles are “baptizing” and “teaching.” Jesus’ choice of words reveals that the goal of our baptizing and teaching is to “make disciples.” And the active tense indicated by the verb “go” indicates the best translation of the word “disciples” may be “active learners,” people who take what they have learned and actively teach others. Thus, making active learners is an intended objective of the mission for Elizabeth Presbyterian Church.
